Public Oriented Design
Multiple accessible entry points are available, such as two bridges from Gilman Square Station,
a seamless opening on School Street leading to plaza seating stairs, and an entrance on Medford Street. These entryways offer convenient access for people to gather.

The design of the first two floors aims to cultivate a vibrant atmosphere with a mix of indoor
and outdoor spaces, promoting interaction and a sense of togetherness.

In contrast to the ground-level orientation, which is intended for visitors entering the site from the community, the upper orientation of the site is designed specifically for residents. This orientation not only provides ample daylight but also helps to mitigate the sound from passing trains, creating a more peaceful living environment.

Apartment residents can enjoy balcony views overlooking the central plaza, participating in events like porch fests to engage with the community below. Conversely, plaza visitors can look up to enjoy music performed by residents, fostering a dynamic atmosphere that encourages interaction in the shared outdoor space.

Community + Housing Design

“Wouldn’t it be incredible if neighbors and friends could come together and celebrate at Gilman Square.” The Green Line Extension has now made this area easily accessible to visitors and residents of Somerville.

The goal of this project was to establish a new identity for Gilman Square. A welcoming place for people of all ages and cultural backgrounds—a space for enjoyment and leisure, where young people can gather afterschool. A third place, fostering a sense of community and providing opportunities for both celebration and day-to-day enjoyment.
