“When words such as painting and sculpture are used, they connote a whole tradition and imply a consequent acceptance of this tradition, thus placing limitations on the artist who would be reluctant to make artthat goes beyond the limitations.” — Sol Lewitt
My project focuses on the limitation of how gravity influences the form of glass sculpture. As a first foray into the art of glass-making, I have chosen to reflect the vicious characteristics of molten glass in the organic and irregular forms of my vessels. I display my work with cacti and other succulents that mirror the asymmetrical qualities and the organized yet sporadic forms of my vessels. I sealed herbs and spices in the containers with handcrafted cork plugs to demonstrate the functional quality of the glass, rather than being limited to decoration.
